What causes ageing? According to Professor David Sinclair, it is a loss of information in our epigenome, the system of proteins that turn on and off genes. He is claiming they have made progress in understanding ageing and can even slow it down substantially by activating the body’s own defenses against aging by stressing the body. This includes eating less; eating less protein; engaging in intense exercise; and experiencing extreme temperatures. When the body senses existential threats it triggers longevity genes, which attempt to maintain the body to ensure its survival until good times return. So, there is now this idea of two modes of living: repair and protect (longevity) vs. grow and re-produce (ageing).
Is this something you’d be interested in? / What age would you like to stay and why? / Should we be looking at ways to slow down ageing? / What are the moral implications of this? / The sci-fi film Elysium has this technology and all it does is create an even bigger divide between the wealthy who live long healthy lives and the poor who do not. Do you think this would be the reality?
