A Vietnamese couple were recently arrested for performing unlicensed cosmetic surgery from their home near Tokyo. The couple apparently performed various procedures including lip filler injections amongst other things.
The couple studied online and had family members who were trained doctors with whom they consulted.
As of now, no health problems have been reported by their patients.
What are your thoughts on this? Should the couple be punished harshly?
Do you think they deserve some credit for studying online and managing to run a successful operation without injuring anyone?
Possible topics for conversation:
What do you think are the most popular cosmetic surgeries?
(E.g. Japan - double eyelids, U.S.A - liposuction and breasts, Europe - rhinoplasty and breasts.)
It is becoming more common for kids to want surgery for their birthdays. If you had kids would you allow them?
Would you have cosmetic surgery if it was cheaper or even free?
What do you think is the reason for its growing popularity?
Do you think that due to social media and false advertising online, people’s beauty standards are becoming unrealistic?
How do you think culture shapes people’s perception of beauty?
