News: Kyle Rittenhouse Acquitted
If people are unfamiliar here’s a brief synopsis.
A 17-year-old boy named Kyle Rittenhouse travelled across state lines to a place called Kenosha armed with semi-auto rifle. He says he went with the intention of protecting local businesses from protesters / rioters. He was followed by a group which included a man named Joseph Rosenbaum. Rittenhouse shot this man dead after he was startled by a gunshot fired into the air by a member of the group.
He was pursued by at least a dozen people – he then tripped and fell. While on the ground a man named Anthony Huber struck Rittenhouse with a skateboard in an attempt to disarm him. Kyle shot him once in the chest, killing him. Another armed man approached Rittenhouse while pointing a gun at him. Rittenhouse shot him in the arm – as a result the man was not fatally injured.
Kyle was charged with two counts of homicide and one count of attempted homicide but was finally acquitted. In relation to the case and the verdict, public sentiment and news coverage have been polarized to say the least.
note: the protests in Kenosha started after the (non-fatal) shooting of Jacob Blake – there was a warrant for his arrest based on charges of domestic abuse & sexual assault. He was apparently holding a knife and the police believed he was trying to kidnap his girlfriend’s child. Bystanders claim he wasn’t being violent.
Possible Questions:
1) Was it the correct decision to acquit Kyle Rittenhouse?
2) The police were criticized for not immediately arresting Rittenhouse despite witnesses all shouting that he was the witness. Do you think the police
3) Do you think this sets a bad example, and will promote vigilantism?
4) If Rittenhouse had been black do you think the verdict would have been different?
5) Trump showed support for the verdict and described the trial as a “witch hunt” form the radical left – do you think there is any merit to this?
Extra ) If this happened in Japan what do you think would happen?
