Japanese Literature Part III: The Tale of the Heike

Word definitions
epic (n./adj.): a long story of heroes or legends / having an epic style; heroic or grand
FYI:  For Your Information – phrase used before adding some related info
respectively (adv.):  in that order
chronicle (v.):  write what happened historically (in the order things happened in)
tragedy (n.):  something sad that causes great loss and/or emotional pain
romanticize (v.):  make something sound better/more beautiful than it actually was
scholar (n.):  a person with advanced knowledge studying a particular subject
prose (n.):  ‘regular’ writing style (compared to a poem – like a typical book)
verse (n.):  text written like a poem; a line of poetry
philosophical (adj.):  related to understanding the basic nature of knowledge and reality
athos (n.):  causing feelings of sadness and pity (feeling sorry for someone/something)
futile (adj.): having no chance of success or effect
suffering (n.): physical or mental pain/discomfort
ambition (n.): a strong desire for success or achievement
drown (v.): die by being unable to breathe in water (or similar liquid)
half-brother (n.):  brother that has only one parent in common
cunning (adj.):  clever and good at tricking others to get what he/she wants
how the mighty have fallen: showing surprise or pity to someone who lost their power/status
