Topic: Deadlines
Lesson: Useful language

Deadlines are present in all businesses. The closer a deadline gets, the more agitated or motivated people become. This week we are going to look at useful English to talk about deadlines, progress and delays.

Part 1: Common phrases
Read the sentences and circle the correct word to complete each one.

Part 2.1: Explaining delays and problems
It is always possible to get behind schedule. So, being able to explain it is important when you need to update people on progress or explain why something has happened as a result of delays. There are some useful phrases for explaining something is behind schedule.

Part 2.2: Reasons for delays
After presenting the listener with the fact that you, the department, team, etc. are having problems staying on schedule, you usually explain why this is the case. There are three of the most common ways of presenting the listener with reasons why you are behind schedule.

Part 3: Group discussion
As a class, let’s talk about times that we have had deadlines, had problems and delays, etc. and talk about how we overcame these problems.
