There are some things that we can start and finish in one week, one month or maybe one year... but this is not the case when learning a new language! How can we keep motivation for long-term, or even lifelong goals?
For me, it's about perspective. When I'm losing motivation, I usually feel something like this:
"There are too many things to learn!"
"How will I memorise all of this grammar/vocabulary?"
"Where do I start?"
In this situation, it can be helpful to zoom in. If I focus on a small problem, I feel encouraged. This can be one lesson, one sentence, or even one word! Once I feel confident, I can move on to another small piece.
On the other hand, I might also feel like this:
"I didn't understand this lesson at all..."
"I feel like I'm not making progress."
"I can't focus right now."
At this time, I might be looking at the problem too closely, so I will zoom out instead. I'll think about why I want to learn, what it means to me, and try to appreciate all of the things I've learned so far.
I think that we are all improving every day, but it takes the right perspective to notice the changes. Let's keep learning together!
