In May, I paid a visit to the rose garden at Nakanoshima. It was a very different experience to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, surrounded by tall buildings in downtown Osaka. I thought it was a strange place to put a rose garden, but I was glad that busy office workers could easily come and enjoy it after work.
I don't know anything about roses, so I judged them at a very superficial level. I lost count of the number of varieties that were blooming, but I tried to smell each one. I think a flower is only as good as its scent! After a while the sun began to go down, so I was able to enjoy the twilight atmosphere.
I was also surprised to see the British-style tearoom nearby, called Kitahama Retro. The queue was incredibly long, and 99% of the customers were women, so I felt very conspicuous. But I was happy to see that British culture is still popular in Japan. I recommend the Royal Vanilla Earl Grey!
