Setsubun

In April this year it will be 10 years since I moved to Japan. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to experience many interesting cultural activities, such as New Year’s celebrations at temples and shrines, cherry blossom viewing, tea ceremonies, weddings, festivals, and more. But, I had never seen the bean-throwing festival (Setsubun) in Kyoto.
This year I decided to take my family to a Setsubun celebration in Kyoto. We chose Heian Jingu because we thought other places might be too crowded to enjoy with children (I have two young daughters). I think we made the right choice. Although it was busy, the grounds were spacious, which allowed everyone to comfortably enjoy the different activities.
The festival had different parts, including a parade of people whose leader wore a mask (an “exorcism” ceremony to drive away bad spirits), and the burning of wooden plaques. But the most exciting part was when the “oni,” or ogres, appeared. They wore amazing masks and marched around, intimidating the crowd. Although I really enjoyed watching the oni walk around, my children were quite frightened , and so were all the other children around us! At the end of the ceremony, we were able to collect a packet of beans each.
Later that day, my daughters told me they enjoyed seeing the “real oni" because the ones they had seen at their nursery were nothing compared to these. I thought it was very cute and was happy we had gone to see the ceremony. I’m already looking forward to experiencing it at a different shrine next year.
